The Pelting Workshop June 2024

On June 28, 2024, Environs Kaitiaki hosted a transformative pelting workshop, richly supported by the Department of Conservation (DOC). The event was a vital part of cultural and environmental preservation efforts, where DOC, known for its dedicated stewardship of New Zealand’s natural heritage, held taonga manu (treasured birds) for a significant time. This careful preservation allowed Te Uri o Hau to delve deep into the art and science of pelting,  aligning traditional techniques with modern practices for effective and respectful processing.

During the workshop, over 40 manu were meticulously processed, reflecting on passing down ancestral knowledge and techniques. Participants from various backgrounds gathered to engage in this cultural exchange, ensuring that the skills and respect necessary to handle these taonga were shared and understood. This event underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in cultural preservation and environmental conservation.
