Our Commitment to Kaitiakitanga

Environs Long Term Strategic Plan 2024-2027

Through connection and relationship-building, design and delivery of restoration and protection projects, and advocacy and representation, Environs builds the capability of our people to practice kaitiakitanga, and works actively to restore, and to advocate for, te taiao and our taonga.

Our Strategic Pou

Toitū te Tangata

We support the kaitiaki of our 14 marae, enabling them to lead the kaitiakitanga of their whenua, wai and moana.

Toitū te Taiao

We plan, design and implement restoration (Poipoia te Mauri) and protection (Poipoia te Kākano) projects in sites of significance for our people.

Toitū te Rangatiratanga

We advocate for te taiao and our taonga, and to embed Te Uri o Hau tino rangatiratanga in plans, policies, practices and decisions of government agencies and others.

Our Workstreams

Poipoia te Kākano

Poipoia te Kākano project, working alongside Predator Free 2050 Limited to show the eradication of predators is possible.  This land-based project along with our other trapping contracts restore native species and ecosystems. This includes pest eradication and possum control within Te Uri o Hau rohe.

Predator Free Ltd 2050 project: Eradicating possums by 2026, at its heart it’s about restoring and protecting the Kaipara region’s biodiversity–threatened by invasive predators

Trapping in Pouto: A DOC contract to control possums around our Dune Lakes to protect Matuku and other taonga species.

Trapping the East Coast: Two trapping contacts with Shorebird Trust and DOC to protect the Tara iti.

Kōrero Tuku Iho – Foundational Project

Our project Kōrero Tuku Iho (KTI), is the cultural dimension of Kaipara Moana Remediation, delivering one of its two foundations.  KTI enables Kaipara Uri, iwi, hapū, and marae contributions to improving the health, wellbeing and mauri of Kaipara Moana.

The Kōrero Tuku Iho project is now seeking expressions of interests, from Kaipara Uri, iwi, hapū, marae, and whānau, to undertake Whakatauira. The purpose of each Whakatauira is to gather stories, memories, histories, values and generate a deeper understanding of Kaipara Uri, iwi, hapū, marae and whānau communities’ narratives about their natural world and the places of significance to them within the Kaipara Moana catchment.

Whakatauira will support KMR’s primary objective to reduce sediment entering the Kaipara Moana in order to protect and restore the mauri of the Moana. Click the link below to apply.
